Is there a way to Sleep Better?

I know a sleeping disorder very well. It will cause impatience, a short temper, fatigue, and a vicious circle of life starts. I had been suffering from a sleeping disorder for 10 years. I still feel I lost an important part of my life. When I finally recovered from it, I couldn’t believe I hadn’t found the simple solution earlier.

The fight in bed

I hear many experience negative thoughts in bed. An argument at work, financial problems, whatever it is, those will be amplified when we are alone with our minds. As the mind and body are interconnected, these negative thoughts increase the stress hormone, and the physical body enters a “fighting mode,” which is totally the opposite of sleeping.

What should we do?

In my Reiki training, it is obligatory to practice clearing negative thoughts before going to sleep. It is like taking a hot soap bath to clean all the dirt. We do the same for the mind. Once we release emotional dirt and anything we don’t need for sleep, then we fall asleep.

How do you do that? The answer is

Uniting the body and mind.

In my stress management training, there is a practice to clear the negative thoughts before sleeping. It is like taking a hot soap bath to clean all dirt. We do the same for the mind. Once we release emotional baggage or anything we don’t need for sleep, then we fall asleep. We need to practice it to perform it whenever we need it. It may take time, but you will be better and better every day.

For example, when you walk, your body is walking, but often your mind is elsewhere, lost in thoughts. When you eat, your body takes in food, yet your mind is busy thinking of other things. The body and mind are not collaborating, but do different things.

But once you practice aligning body and mind, they become a good team. What happens is that when the body eats, the mind also eats. When the body walks, the mind walks together. Then, when the body sleeps, the mind also sleeps. As the trust between the mind and body strengthens, sleep quality will improve further.

When examining the healthy human body, we see that all cells work together to support one another as a unified whole. Then the body and mind should also support each other, not blaming each other. This is the simplest realization that helped me overcome my sleeping difficulty.

When there is harmony between body and mind, you can sleep deeply even in hard times. It is because the body and mind must be strong enough to overcome them. The body and mind are designed in this way, not for self-destruction in a safe bed.

So, today, let’s unite your body, mind, and even energy with Reiki practice!

If you hear the excited voice from your body and mind when they hear Reiki practice, you are the real practitioner.

If we look at the healthy human body, all cells help each other. We are one team. The body and mind should support each other too. This is the simplest answer I realized when I got over insomnia. When there is harmony between body and mind, you can sleep deeply. So, today, let’s talk with your body and mind in meditation.

Have you ever learned how to eat?

I think my generation will agree with me. When we were young, we were not allowed to eat while watching TV or reading a book. We could not even talk during eating. We needed to focus on eating silently with an appreciation for the food. I could smile when the food was delicious. It was allowed.

Was it boring?

It may sound boring table, but actually, it was joyful. Do you want to try? Let’s imagine there is a beautiful fresh watermelon on your plate. You enjoy beautiful many colors, enjoy it. Please bring it toward your mouth, and you will notice the smell of watermelon; enjoy it. Let’s bite it, and the sweetness spread in your mouth. Enjoy it. Then, it passes through the esophagus and arrive stomach. Can you feel the rise of satisfaction in your body? Enjoy it. We enjoyed food with 5 or even 6 senses, one by one. Wasn’t it a joyful experience?

Foods have its long history

Any food in front of you has a history. Let’s imagine a grain of rice that was left in your bowl. Farmers who gave literally 24 hours of constant care had grown this rice grain. Many people are involved in collecting, polishing, transporting, cooking, and then it is in front of you. Without their effort, we wouldn’t have the grain of rice. Moreover, we don’t have grain if the earth does not have good soil, water, heat, and wind. Needless to say, if this universe didn’t start unknown years ago, we wouldn’t have it.

Appreciation = Smile

So, when we eat food, we appreciate and also contemplate. In Japan, we appreciate people who work hard for the food and their good, caring intentions for us. Some people even contemplate if they are worth eating the foods. Then, we can raise modesty in us. Then, we appreciate the food, which transforms into part of our bodies. Then, we remind ourselves again to use our minds and bodies for good purpose. A smile naturally comes because of this opportunity and fortune that we have. Joyful, isn’t it?  Let’s have a lunch break now.

Where is the best place to experience calmness?

We all have something that triggers irritation. To me, it was a noise. For example, loud music or an endless chatter from a neighbour’s room. As soon as the sound was created, it caused negative thoughts in my mind. As I cared too much, it even caused me insomnia.

So, I naturally started to look for the calmest place. At that time, I thought the best place should be silent, literally no noise. As you can imagine, it was a long Journey.

I traveled to many places. I went to a Buddhist temple, which was built in the middle of nowhere in Scotland. It must be a silent place, right?

I had been looking for the best place to meditate (or sleep) when I was young. At that time, I thought the best place was the calmest place, literally no noise.

LONG JOURNY

I traveled to many places. I went to a Buddhist temple, which was built in the middle of nowhere in Scotland. It must be a silent place, right? Unfortunately, I could not find the calmest place. It is because the calmer it becomes, the more noise you notice, like breathing sounds of those who are sitting around you.

I should be alone

I started looking for solitude. So, I went to a cave to experience the calmest meditation, just as meditation masters have done in the past. But the truth is that it was not the calmest place at all. There was a strange wind sound and numerous “insects” in the cave. They constantly bothered me, as you can imagine. It was really a busy and lively place.

Recording studio?

I finally found a place that is created perfectly, with no external sound. I went to the Monroe Institute in the U.S, in Virginia for consciousness studies. The institute is situated in a mountainous area. Additionally, they have a special room covered with a copper plate in the underground. This is the one. You won’t believe this, but I even wore noise-cancelling headphones in the room, just in case. So, was that the calmest experience? The answer is no. I heard my loud thoughts. I learned that there is no calm place as long as my mind is not calm. This is the conclusion of my long journey.

We’ve already had the calmness inside

So, I decided to travel inside my mind. I was amazed that we already have the calmest state of mind. Wherever your physical body may be, we just enter the calmest state of the mind. You will feel everything is moving, but you are static. It is such calmness.

This is where I’d like to guide you through meditation and energy practice. Not looking for the best retreat place, but looking for the state of mind, which already exists. Then, let’s practice Reiki.

Have you learned how to Rest?

Now you know how to relax and focus as discussed in the previous posts. Now, we are ready to unite both mind and body in a state of zen alignment and enjoy resting. This is a reward you can get, and it is time to rejoice.

you become everything

As you practice Zen alignment more and more, your body becomes entirely relaxed and light, like a feather, in the end. You may not even feel your body when you add energy practice. Your mind is clear and sharp, undisturbed by both negative and positive thoughts. Your mind is like the flat surface of the water, which is a mirror. Rest in this mind state makes you feel you are everything. You are switching to your identity to everything. This is important.

5 senses sleep, new perception arises

This is the state where you should take a rest during sleep, or even a tea break. If you experience this state during meditation practice, you may begin to experience resting in your pure consciousness, definitely not in a stormy ocean of thoughts.  In this mind state, it does not bother you even if you have a physical disorder or disease because you are distant from the sense of I. Fear and anxiety cannot enter this sacred state of the mind. We are very fortunate to get the key to enter this place. We just need to open the door and rest when we need to. Where is the key? Let’s go find in practice.

Have you learned how to Focus?

I had this simple question when I was a little boy. Teachers told me to focus on studying, but “how can I focus?” Most people didn’t learn how to, but managed somehow in their own way. Don’t you think it is a good idea to teach at school? I kept searching for a training method. It was not taught in a school, but in a temple, in 1992.

One of the biggest problems of losing focus is the random and endless thoughts in your mind. It will constantly distract you from what you want to focus on. The thoughts will pop up like short video content on social media networks. The curious videos, carefully chosen based on your browsing preferences, will be continuously displayed as long as you scroll. You will need to become aware that it is you who is scrolling, unless you keep watching what they want to show you.

There is a practice to increase concentration

There is a simple meditation practice called shamatha in Sanskrit, shyiné in Tibetan, or Shikan in Japanese. You will learn to focus on one point or object. Thoughts will arise, but we practice not to engage with them. You will not be bothered by your auto-generated thoughts. You gain control over your mind. It is the training to make your mind clearer and sharper. Then, it is easy to focus on one thing in this crystal clear mind. The intensity of focus is not comparable with the uncontrolled mind.

negative thoughts cannot control you anymore

If you achieve this skill, there is a big bonus other than increasing focus. You won’t be bothered by negative thoughts. It is the negative thoughts that make us overthink and become exhausted. When you feel tired, please check your body and mind.  Is the mind tired or the body is tired? If you can move normally, the body is not tired yet. Most people feel tired because their minds are overworked.

If it is the case, you will find complete rest in this meditation. Actually, there are more big bonuses, but it is more joyful if you find them yourself. So let’s go find the reset state, by Zen alignment and energy practice.

Have you learned how to Relax?

Relaxation sounds quite simple, but not so many people can relax when they need to. I think it is because most of us don’t learn how to relax and never practice it. Some may advise you to take a long bath, have a good massage, or sit in a zen garden with a cup of tea, but many of us have an experience that that’s not enough. We cannot relax even on a holiday beach if we have an unnecessary intelligent question in our mind. Is there a way to relax when we want to?

I remember an answer from my meditation teacher. A stock market trader attended a meditation class and asked my teacher if he could teach him a meditation method to help him relax when stressed. My teacher’s answer was simple: “Too late.” All students laughed, but it was a correct answer. It means “it’s too late to meditate if one is already stressed.”

If we are not trained to do something, it is impossible to perform it. If one doesn’t know how to swim and somebody pushes him into the water, how could he save his own life? He would be in a panic, and things would get worse if he tried to swim, which he never did. So, we need to practice in advance. Then, what is the practice?

We first teach our body and mind what the relaxed state is using meditation methods. If the body and mind experience it multiple times, it becomes a memory and a habit in the end. Then, we keep practicing to go to a relaxed state every day effortlessly. You know both the stressed and relaxed. When you realize you are going to excess stress, you use the relaxation method to return to the relaxed state. You have the control; external events cannot control you.

A 15 min practice will save your life

Some of my students found that they could fix even shoulder aches and headaches by this relaxation practice. The body and mind are programmed to repeat our habits. If you make a positive habit, it brings us a positive result, if you make a negative habit, then it brings us a negative result. You may be able to resolve issues simply by learning how to relax. On top of that, once it becomes your habit, you don’t even have to make an effort to do it; your body and mind will naturally do it. I think it is worth practicing, isn’t it?

Which exact practice should we do? Yes, it is the Zen alignment.
